It was kind of obvious that Charli was going to be at the Met, considering she’s been hanging out in New York the last week or so, planning press for her SWEAT Tour with Troye Sivan, and playing impromptu sets all across town. Well, here she is at the steps of the Met, and Charli XCX’s Met Gala dress understood the assignment.

She’s wearing a custom Marni gown that’s made of torn-up old, white T-shirts from the ’50s and ’60s styled with a cone bra (because she’s an icon, but also because she pays homage to pop icons before her). The white dress has tones of tears and stitches all the way throughout the fabric.

Charli XCX got ready at The Mark Hotel, a popular spot for Met Gala guests to get all done up. Her makeup was done by popular indie makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench using MAC Cosmetics. She wore a really simple makeup look, some light smoke around her eyes, a stony gray contour and a beautiful highlight, and inky brown lipstick. She paired the look with simple, sweeping eyelashes. Her hair was put up in a punky updo.

Charli’s dress reflects the theme, “Garden of Time,” beautifully. It’s based on a collection at the Costume Institute, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” which honors the archival labor of certain historic pieces of clothing that, due to their delicate nature, are difficult or impossible to wear twice. Her Marni look really encompasses that aged, delicate elegance.

This past week, Charli has been busy. She, along with her friend and long time collaborator Troye Sivan, went on Late Night with Seth Meyers talking about their music both as individuals and as a duo. They’ll be on tour later this year. They also talked about how the first time they met was at one of Charli’s house parties in LA.
