We put the Covergirl Simply Ageless Skin Perfector Essence to the test after receiving a complimentary sample from the brand. Keep reading for our full product review.

For a long time, I was unsure about the role of an essence in skincare. If you’re in the same boat, here’s a quick breakdown: An essence is a hydrating product mostly used between cleansing and moisturizing, and is generally thinner than a serum, but thicker than water. One of my favorites is 4.5.6 Skin’s Méla Skin Reset Biomimetic Essence ($62), but even though I’m now well familiar with the purpose of an essence, the idea of a product that combines its benefits with foundation is a newer concept to me. Covergirl’s Simply Ageless Skin Perfector Essence ($21) claims to offer hydration, lightweight coverage, and other skin benefits, so I had to try it out to see if it lives up to these promises. I was excited to see whether the product could give me the even-toned skin I crave in a single step. Keep reading for my full review of this instantly viral new foundation.

Covergirl Simply Ageless Skin Perfector Essence

Active Ingredients: 0.5% bakuchiol

About the brand: Founded in 1961, Covergirl is a cosmetic company that encourages positive self-image and expression with affordable makeup products. The brand offers a range of complexion products, mascaras, lip products, and more, with its range available in most drugstores.

About My Skin: On the drier side

My skin has always leaned dry, which has led me to search for products that improve hydration and increase glow. I love my makeup to have a radiant finish, as it makes me look more vibrant and upbeat and boosts my confidence as a result. Dryness and skin discoloration are the main areas I like to focus on improving with any product, and since Covergirl’s Simply Ageless Skin Perfector Essence claims to boost hydration while offering even coverage, I had to test it out for myself as that sounded like exactly what I'm always looking for.

The Texture: A silky, water-based formula

The texture of this essence-foundation hybrid is the main event. Like any other essence, the product has a familiar, water-based feel when it goes onto your skin. However, one innovative component makes this formula stand out: The silky feel allows the product to apply smoothly to the skin, but the formula also features pigmented micro-capsules for the makeup element. Since it includes the tiny capsules, this is thicker than other essence products, while still being lightweight for the foundation category.

How to Apply: Activate the capsules, then blend

The Covergirl Simply Ageless Skin Perfector Essence has a clear application method to follow thanks to the product's pigmented capsules that work to smooth the skin’s tone and texture. It's necessary to first activate the capsules, so the brand suggests rubbing the product between your fingers or with a brush, then applying it to your skin. It's up to your preferred level of coverage whether you use this product as a primer or as a standalone foundation.

The Results: A blurred, smooth texture with a skin-like finish

When I was first testing out the Covergirl Simply Ageless Skin Perfector Essence, my friends couldn’t stop asking me whether I was wearing makeup. The question was such a compliment to me because lately, I haven’t felt like wearing much makeup at all. The best part about wearing this tinted essence is the absence of guilt in doing so: When I wear heavy products, I can’t help but wonder whether my skin is happy underneath or irritated and clogged. In addition to being lightweight and hydrating, this product includes 0.5% bakuchiol, which is great for reducing fine lines and fading hyperpigmentation. Even before helping to reduce the appearance of the pigmentation and fine lines over time, the micro-capsules blurred those concerns with ease. The product’s even-toned, natural finish lasts all day, but it does transfer a bit if you touch your face, so I used setting spray to counter that. I’m enjoying this product so much that I’ve continued using it every day since the first time I tried it.

The Value: Affordable and worth every penny

Covergirl's Simply Ageless Skin Perfector Essence is slightly more expensive than some other drugstore options at $21, but it's still significantly more affordable than prestige brands, and you get a lot of bang for your buck. I can firmly account for the fact that it changed my outlook on everyday makeup completely. For less than $25, you get an innovative product with multiple benefits. The essence is great for caring for your skin, while the micro-capsules provide lightweight coverage that evens tone and texture. All in all, this product is totally worth the hype.
