There’s something going around in the shoe industry. Crocs made platform clogs, The North Face made puffer slippers, Balenciaga made shoes that aren’t even shoes (??), and so on. But in comes UGG with perhaps the most unexpected launch of them all: the Bea Mary Jane .
My jaw dropped to the floor when I first saw the news because who would’ve thought the brand would combine its signature, chunky, shearling boot design with the timeless Mary Jane shoe style that celebs like Justin Bieber and Suki Waterhouse have sported? My initial thoughts: I don’t think these should have been made. But after thinking some more and seeing the kicks on actual models, styled and all, I quickly warmed up to them. You can’t blame UGG for tapping into a shoe trend brands are using and shoppers are buying (I’d know—I’m one of them!).
I’ll admit it, I see UGG’s vision now. Mix the popular UGG platform boot silhouette with a strap over the top of the foot and voila! You’ve got a shoe that shouldn’t make sense but does. The Bea Mary Jane ($120) flaunts a suede upper, a 1.75-inch platform, a lightweight sugarcane EVA outsole, the brand’s iconic sheepskin lining inside, and a comfortable insole.

The new UGGs come in three colorways—Mustard Seed, Chestnut, and Black—and in sizes 5 through 12 (unfortunately, no half sizes). According to shopper ratings, the Bea fits true to size. However, I did notice several shoppers say the boots can be a bit tough to slip into because of the snug fit of the Mary Jane strap. While the shoes are meant to be slip-on style, an adjustable strap might’ve been the move here, according to people who have already gotten their hands on the new release.
As for styling, the models on UGG’s website take a preppier approach, pairing the shoes with knee-high and chunky socks and pieces like mini skirts. I, however, would throw on ankle socks—perhaps my favorite frilly or bow socks from Bombas—to balance out the shoe’s natural chunkiness. I think the Bea would also look great peeking out from underneath baggy jeans or trousers. No matter how you choose to wear UGG’s newest addition, they’re bound to make a statement.
Sure, UGG’s Mary Janes might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I’m telling you now, I think they’re worth a shot. They’re unique, cozy, and interesting to look at, and they’ll certainly stand out among the crowd of Adidas Sambas and ballet flats. I say, let’s get them trending!
