There are many actresses I’d call mother, but Anne Hathaway is truly someone that raised me. From The Princess Diaries to Ella Enchanted and obviously The Devil Wears Prada, her in-film style informed so much of my (and Jeremy Strong’s?) own taste—especially when it came to hair. Now, as an adult, Anne in real life is the inspiration I turn to.

On January 8, Hathaway appeared in Shanghai to attend the opening ceremony of Bvlgari's Year of the Snake-honoring “Serpenti Infinito” exhibition. Stepping out on the red carpet in a shimmery gold gown and serpentine necklace, it was her hair that once again stole the show. That was actually the subplot of Princess Diaries, too.

Instead of the cool-girl tousled look she favors, often wearing her hair down or in a ponytail, her famous brown locks were swept into an elegant French twist that I’m sure former Queen of Genovia Clarice Renaldi would approve of.

Perhaps most importantly, her ever-present-in-one-form-or-another bangs were swept far, far to the side and locked down there to stay out of her face. If you couldn’t see their blunt ends tickling her ear, you might think she simply had a side part. But no—this was the work of a good hairstylist and proper product.

Orlando Pita championed the style, sharing some behind-the-scenes snaps of his work to his Instagram story. In one video, you could see the back of the 42-year-old’s head, where the twist stayed put in all its silky, shiny, elegant glory. Mastering the art of the French pin isn’t the easiest task in the world, but it’s worth it.

Celebrity makeup artist Jillian Dempsey was also on hand to assist with glam, completing the vision with a few coats of black mascara, pink lipstick, and the sweetest flush of rosy blush applied to the apples of the actress’s cheeks.

I know Anne Hathaway's not really a princess, but man does she—and this look—rule.
