Pantone has made an announcement: Mocha Mousse is their 2025 Color of the Year. The new color is a medium brown shade that’s slightly rosy and warm in its undertone and soft in its saturation. For the first time in over twenty years, Pantone has chosen a shade of brown for its famed and always highly anticipated 2025 Color of the Year. Perhaps this comes as a shock. I mean, 2024 was certainly the year of the Brat. It was lime green and dusty grey and black and silver chrome everywhere. Pop culture also gave us bright green and bright pink through Wicked. Things have been literally technicolor. So maybe the brown comes as a pendulum swing against that.
Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute referred to the pick as “infused with subtle elegance and earthy refinement” in a statement. Pantone’s Color of the Year is certainly influential on color trends, but it’s not the only player in the game, so it can’t force culture’s hand. The question, of course, remains to be… is this soft, subtle medium brown really going to be influential enough to cut through the high saturation world we’re currently living in?
It’s not no. We’ve been seeing brown as a huge color trend in fashion. Brown has in the last handful of years replaced black as a key grounding neutral. There is so much teddy bear shearling fleece in fashion, so much camel colored leather. There’s also a lot of raw wood and earth tone colors in homeware and interior design. Clay, ceramics, and porcelain are incredibly popular, as are other natural raw materials.
