Casual Sweater Outfits for Fall: Cozy and Stylish Ideas

Casual Sweater Outfits for Fall: Cozy and Stylish Ideas

It seems like fall weather is finally here to stay, and this time of year, there’s nothing I love to wear more than a cozy sweater with my favorite denim. It’s such a simple, comfortable combo that still looks put-together—perfect for running errands, meeting friends for coffee, or just working from home. Today, I’m sharing some of my favorite casual sweater outfits for fall that make getting dressed easy, stylish, and comfy.

fisherman sweater (S) // MOTHER denim (29) // Addidas sneakers (8) // Clare V Midi Sac // sunnies (option) // similar hoops

I wore this first outfit a few weeks ago when we were visiting friends in Tennessee. It was cold in the mornings and milder in the afternoons, but still sweater weather. This Jenni Kayne cashmere fisherman sweater is one of my all-time favorites. I’ve had it for 3 or 4 years, and it still looks almost new. I get it dry-cleaned several times each season, and I always store it folded with the tissue paper from the dry-cleaners inside during the off-season. If you’re looking for a good dupe, Quince has this one for $99. (Read my post: The Best Cashmere Sweaters for more info!)

To keep the look casual, and I paired the ivory crewneck fisherman sweater with light wash straight ankle jeans and brown suede Adidas sneakers. The brown suede is perfect for fall, and since non-white sneakers are having a moment this fall, I like how it keeps this simple look modern and on-trend.

This sweater also layers nicely under vests and jackets, as shown below. Also, notice how the belt in each outfit adds the perfect finishing touch.

STYLE TIP: When wearing a jacket or vest over a sweater, give the sweater a front tuck and add a belt to define the waist and add another point of interest. I usually match my belt to my shoes, but you don’t have to.

white t-shirt (M) // navy cable crewneck (M) // flare jeans (30) // cognac boots (8.5) // handbag // silver hoops

This navy cable knit crewneck pullover is made of a cotton-blend knit that feels super plush and soft like cashmere, but at a much more accessible price point. Plus, it’s great for those who are allergic to wool.

To keep the look modern and to add interest to the simple outfit, I layered it over a white crewneck t-shirt, and I paired them with flares in a versatile medium indigo wash. The cognac brown ankle boots and handbag create a pleasing contrast against the cool tones of the navy and white, and they also keep the outfit up-to-date, as brown footwear and accessories are trending this fall.

If you get bored with solids, color blocking is a fun way to change up your look with a simple sweater and denim outfit. This colorblock pullover from LOFT is a great price, and I like how it combines bright pink and rust, such an unexpected combination.

To keep the outfit from looking too busy, I wore jeans and shoes that pull colors from the sweater — the dark wash denim repeats the navy from the sleeves, and the brown ballet flats coordinate with the rust in the body. The pink trim remains a pop of unexpected color.

It doesn’t get much simpler than this, but I like the balance of proportions and the fit of each piece. Plus, navy with light wash denim and white sneakers is a classic combo that never goes out of style. This navy v-neck sweater is another LOFT find, and I love the 24″ length, relaxed fit, and the flattering v-neck. Plus, the ribbed details in the knit and the wide rib-cuffed sleeves are subtle details that add points of interest.

stripe quarter-zip (S) // flare jeans (size 29) // brown boots (8) // handbag // sunnies (option)

Stripes are a classic print that is having a moment this fall, and the quarter-zip collared sweater is also trending right now, making this Gap Factory sweater a great way to update your fall wardrobe without breaking the bank. I wore medium wash flare jeans and brown boots to keep the look simple but put-together, but this sweater would look just as good with straight leg jeans and sneakers.

Rails Geneva Cardigan (S) – 20% off in Cart // MOTHER denim (29) – 15% Off with Code TYNOV24SF (also at Bloomies – Triple Points eligible) // black suede booties (8) – 47% off!

Speaking of stripes, this Rails stripe cardigan is a gorgeous knit. While it’s more of an investment sweater, it’s one that will stand the test of time, and it has such nice details that set it apart from anything else I have in my closet. I love the flared sleeves and boxy, cropped fit.

I often wear this cardigan with my MOTHER Hustler frayed ankle flare jeans and black pointy toe suede booties, as show above, for a dressed-up casual outfit I can take out to dinner or even to church on Sundays. It also looks great with black denim, as shown below.

FYI, this sweater is 20% off at Bloomies, and it also comes in a pretty Sand Stripe that is marked down + 15% off with code TYNOV24SF at Saks. These jeans are part of the Saks sale, as well, and these Sam Edelman booties are almost 50% off at Nordstrom Rack!

quilted vest (S) // cashmere hoodie (XS) // MOTHER denim (29) // Vince sneakers (8) – 15% Off with Code TYNOV24SF // brown tote // Celine sunnies – on sale

Sweater hoodies are another nice option to have in your fall/winter wardrobe, to give your denim a chic luxe-sporty vibe. They stand alone nicely, but they also look great layered under vests and jackets. In the outfit above, I put a camel ribbed sweater hoodie under a black jacket, and then I wore light wash jeans and suede sneakers in a muted shade of burgundy to keep the look modern and fun.

If you want a more elevated look, the Caslon Cashmere Crewneck also layers beautifully under a quilted vest. This time, I wore flares and western-inspired suede ankle boots for a more elevated look, and I would normally wear a belt with this too. A belt adds the perfect finishing touch to an outfit like this one, when the waistband of the jeans is exposed. I would coordinate with my bag and shoes.

navy collar cardigan (S) // grey tee (M) // Pistola denim (29) // Vince sneakers (8) – 15% Off with Code TYNOV24SF // caramel handbag // sunnies (option)

Cardigans are making a comeback this fall, and the shorter collared styles that resemble lady jackets are especially on-trend at the moment. I like how they add some elegance to a casual outfit, like this one. I styled this navy collar cardigan over a light grey marl crewneck tee, and I wore light wash straight ankle jeans and sneakers with navy accents to add some juxtaposition and keep the look relaxed and comfortable.

similar LOFT cardigan (S) // black v-neck tee (M) // MOTHER denim (29) – 15% Off with Code TYNOV24SF // black boots (39) (option) // similar belt

You can also dress up a collar cardigan, as I did here. I’m still wearing light wash jeans, but the full length flare with almond-toe ankle boots gives the whole look a more elevated appearance.

fair isle mockneck (S) // off-black jeans (29) // grey mules (8) // gold hoops

Finally, fair isle prints are another classic print that is having a moment this fall, and I love this mockneck style from Gap Factory in the calming neutral color palette. This collared version from LOFT is another nice option. I styled both with washed black jeans and grey suede mules, for casual looks that are both polished and comfy.
