Kaia Gerber just checked into The Carlyle Hotel in New York City yesterday, where she’ll be getting ready for the Met Gala. She kept her fit pretty low-key, but what we’re eyeing are Kaia Gerber’s sneakers—a pair of black leather Nikes upon first glance, but there is more to these shoes than meets the eye.
Gerber first wore these shoes out in public in early April before they were even available to purchase. Here’s the lowdown on the sneaks: They’re a collaboration between Nike and celebrated New York City fashion brand BODE. The Astro Grabbers, as they’re called, are soccer-style cleats. Astro grabbers are an old Nike soccer shoe, originally designed by Bill Bowerman that was resurrected for this collaboration. That soccer shoe shape started becoming trendy once Adidas Sambas became the “shoe of the summer” a couple years ago, and the love for the silhouette hasn’t died down one bit.
The official color way name that Gerber was seen wearing is “black and coconut milk,” but the shoes also come in the reverse color way as well, natural cream and black with a knit upper. The black shoes come with two BODE-exclusive shoelace charms, one silver soccer ball and one gold American football. The white shoes come with four colored charms: a brown football, a red lobster, a green airplane, a cream colored sailboat, and a pink dog.
While they’re sold out on Nike’s website, any true sneakerhead knows that the hunt never ends. There are a ton of brand new pairs on all the major verified resale websites, like Kicks Crew, Stockx, Laced, and more. They are a little pricey, depending on the shoe size you’re looking for.
