Emma Stone Just Wore This Controversial 2010s Trend On the Oscars Red Carpet

All eyes are on Emma Stone tonight — and her mermaid-style dress. Stone is nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role tonight for her performance as Bella Baxter in Poor Things at the 2024 Academy Awards. The film is nominated 11 times tonight, including for Best Picture. She could take home at least one big award. She’s up against Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Carey Mulligan (Maestro), Sandra Huller (Anatomy of a Fall), and Annette Bening (Nyad).

Stone is wearing a custom Louis Vuitton look featuring a strapless corset top with a large peplum, and a floor-length skirt, both with a seashell-like pattern (hence, the mermaid vibes). There’s been talk of the peplum trend coming back for a while now and you can find tops new in fast fashion stores like H&M and Zara. But who would have thought the dramatic peplum would hit the red carpet so soon?!

Stone paired her mermaid dress with light mermaid waves courtesy of longtime hairstylist Mara Roszak. She wanted to add a “modern touch” to an otherwise classic architectural dress. She used her own clean haircare brand, RŌZ, including the new Air Thickening Spray, plus ghd styling tools.

To get Stone’s look, Roszak applied RŌZ Root Lift Spray at the roots and the Air Thickening Spray throughout the rest of the hair. Next, came the RŌZ Milk Hair Serum on the ends for smoothness and humidity protection. She then dried the hair using the ghd Helios Hairdryer .

Roszak then placed velcro rollers at the top of Stone’s head to help with extra volume. After taking the rollers out, the hairstylist teased the crown and used the ghd Curve Soft Curling Iron to curl away from the face and at the nape of the neck. How pretty!

Creating the middle part came last. Roszak used a rat tail comb with a metal tip and brushed everything out, tucking Stone’s hair behind the ears. She finished the look with the RŌZ Santa Lucia Styling Oil for shine.

For her glam, makeup artist Rachel Goodwin used Charlotte Tilbury Beauty makeup and skincare, including the unreleased Pillow Talk Big Lip Plumpgasm, launching on April 4. The new plumping lip gloss will be available in two Pillow Talk shades for hydrated, smooth, and plumper lips.

In celebration, the brand is running a 20 percent discount on CharlotteTilbury.com on all orders over $60. To redeem, apply code REDCARPET at checkout now through March 14.
